COMMANDER'S Message

From my desk to your desk:

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT PLEASE READ

I normally do not send newsletters back to back like this, therefore this message must be important to the membership.

National, at the last convention made certain changes that directly effect you one way or another. The main issue is the life membership, the increase to go into effect Jan. 01, 2007. You have from now till the middle of December to purchase the life membership at the lower rates. Here are some examples of the old and new rates.

2006 Jan. 1, 2007

Through age 30 245.00 425.00

31 - 40 235.00 410.00

41 - 50 215.00 375.00

51 - 60 195.00 335.00

61 - 70 165.00 290.00

71 - 80 125.00 225.00

80 + 85.00 170.00

The next thing National did is raise the per capita tax by 6.00. National will get 3.00 and New York State Department will get 3.00. Since the Post has to pay this amount it will probably mean that there will be an increase in dues by that amount. At this point in time the Post can not absorb that amount.

At the last meeting the membership present were told that our Tuesday and Thursday bingo rental left us. The school that was running the bingo did not get their yearly grant to run their school and had to transfer the children to another school and close down bingo. What that translates to the VFW is that we lost 750.00 weekly rent from them, making money at the VFW very tight. I am currently working with organization to possibly do a rotational bingo between us. It would mean that the VFW do either one or two bingo games a month. The problem is that we need members to help out with the bingo. It boils down to one or two nights giving up 3 to 4 hours to help out. Many other alternatives are being looked at to raise funds concurrently with bingo. With each alternative comes the problem of getting members involved. Bingo is the least demanding because in effect you are not out there begging people to buy a raffle, go to a dance, or play golf. You simply show up at bingo call back the numbers and whatever the player want they will tell you. Therefore the call goes out to you members to step up to the plate and gives us a hand. If we get a lot of individual who would want to help then we can put everybody on rotation and you may not have to do it that often.

Keeping in line with the above topic we need help. The National VFW at its convention a while back made changes to its bylaws allowing Post the institute a MENS AUXILIARY in their Post. The Post at its last meeting past a motion that the VFW Post 5796 establish a mens= auxiliary. I have contacted the New York State Department and am in the process of getting all the necessary paperwork. Some specifics are that only New York State Department will receive 8.50 per capita tax on the auxiliary member. National will only keep a list of the membership. Initially I see the dues for an auxiliary member being the same as our regular member. The auxiliary will function as any other auxiliary, they will have a President and Treasurer and maintain their own books. Qualification for the auxiliary is that the be at least 16 years of age and have had a close relative, grandfather, brother, half brother, grandson, son etc that was a veteran. The package I am receiving will contain the paperwork for those who would be considered the original charter members. If you have a son, grandson or brother you may want to have him sign up as one of the original charter member, as you know the VFW and Ladies Auxiliary original charters hang in the main room for all to see.

On the topic of membership. If you know of a person who is a veteran and does not belong to a Post please try and encourage him or her to join our post. If you feel funny about asking them to join then give us his or her name and either a phone number or address and we will talk to them. This also pertains to our Ladies Auxiliary, they also have a need to increase their membership and hopefully get some young people involved to help them. In addition to everything else concerning membership we have approximately 32 members who have not paid their current membership dues. If you are not sure whether you are paid or not give our quartermaster a call and check on your status. Gene can be reached at 631 544-6774. At the very least you can pay your dues to help support Post. If there is a valid reason why you can not pay it is more important to call Gene and tell him why. I=m sure if conditions warrant it arrangements can be made. All conversation pertaining this matter will be held confidentially.

NEXT VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR YOU TO HAVE. WE ARE CHANGING OUR PHONE SERVICE. OUR NEW NUMBER WILL BE 663-3092 IF YOU CALL OUR CURRENT NUMBER AND DO NOT GET AN ANSWER PLEASE TRY THE NEW NUMBER. THE NEW NUMBER SHOULD BE IN EFFECT ON 9/22/2006. With this change we will have internet service provide with that number which will allow us to keep in touch with you and you with us via the internet. This change was also necessary because National wants the quartermaster to do all business transaction over the internet thru their website. The new number will also cut down on our telephone calls because there is not extra charge to call anywhere in the USA or CANADA. We will also be looking in setting up our own website to encourage new members to join. Once we have the service installed I will let you know what our email address and website name. If any of you have any experience on developing a website please get in touch with me. Last item under this topic is our telephone calling tree. This has been a major issue for a long time. Every time we had a death or needed members to help with bingo somebody forgot to call the members to let them know we needed them making us shorthanded. It was not enough that I printed in the newsletter times and dates, it always turned out that the member forgot about it. I will be putting into effect a recorded calling system for notification of events. If you receive a call from me it will be a recorded message. I am doing this because I need to call as many members with the message with the least amount of time on the phone.

Latest update on Suffolk County C.E.R.T. (Community emergency response team). We currently have four of our members going through the training program. This will probably be the core team for Kings Park community including myself. I wrote at length in the last newsletter about this team. Consider taking the training, it is offered free by Suffolk County and is very interesting. There is no age restriction and the knowledge you gain will protect you in case of an emergency..

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Post will be holding a Chinese Auction at the Post hall at 40 church street on Friday October 20, 2006. The doors open at 6:30 P. M.. The Auction begins at 7:45 P. M., admission is 6.00 per person and you receive 20 tickets. Free refreshments. Come join us for and evening of fun. The auction will benefit the Long Island Homeless Veterans. Thank you Clare Lorer, Chair Lady phone no 265-0693.

I realize this letter is somewhat long but the information contained in it effects you and needed to be presented to you. The officers and members that attend meetings are working hard to make sure this Post is around for our young veterans coming home from overseas. This Post was a home and a gather place for past and present veterans to come and socialize, fight with each other, dance the night away and just to share time with a brother veteran. One of the easiest things to do is to say the hell with it sell the building we used it and abused it and forget about the future veterans that are returning home it served our purpose and that=s all that counts. This Post has done so much for the community with its= school programs, scholarship, parades, and donation to various organization.

If you need to get in touch with me here is how to do it.
